Farming
Crafting requires collaboration! Your help updating these pages is appreciated. |
Paul says: Farming is one of the basic but essential skills of crafting. The food that you farm is not only used by chefs in their creations, but also by all the other professions, for salts, herbs, and so forth. If you would like to try it, you could ask me about joining. Or, if you just want help, just ask for help.
Contents
Basics
At the southwest corner of each farm there is a shed where you can buy food and tools.
There are 4 major steps to farming: 'stake claim', prep the soil, feed the plant, 'harvest'
- To stake a claim, you need to go find a plant within your level range. There are various farms throughout the realms, but at the very beginning you'll be using the farm to the NW of Paul.
- Once you have a plant, you need to prep the soil. This tends to be the first line of a recipe, the intent during this stage is to set it up so that during the growth phase you just have to replace what the plant is eating. After the soil is set up, typing 'grow plant' will begin the growth phase, or you can just wait a little bit.
- Plants work in growing rounds. These occur every 5 or so mud rounds and you'll receive a flowery description of how the plant is doing. This is also when the plant consumes food, so make sure the plant is properly fed before the end of each growing round. There is no voodoo magic involved here; if a plant has the right resources it will grow, otherwise it will wither.
- If your recipe was spot on, or if you monitored the soil properly and adjusted as necessary, then your plant will eventually grow and become harvestable. 'harvest plant', take the food and stash it.
Resource, Tools, and Food
Resources and Tools
The primary method of monitoring resources is by looking: look at ground;look at insects;look at mushrooms;look at weeds. This will give you 4 possible descriptions of 9 different resources. Monitor these constantly, create an alias to look at all of them and create triggers to catch the descriptions and give you numbers instead so you can evaluate the condition of the soil quickly.
Tools may be used starting at level 10, and each tool will measure two resources and give you an approximate average of their values. Whenever you use a tool, it will consume some of the resource that it measures. This can of course screw up your soil. Goblins may be used starting at level 25.
All the tools (besides look, presumably that is 100% accurate) and resources mention "try" in their messages and it appears that some of the variability in recipes comes from failures in adding resources.
Below is a list of the various known resources and their respective measuring tools, as well as the visible scales for the applicable resources.

Recipes
It was suggested on the craft line that this section is a sort of "spoiler" for those wanting to farm without these "cheats".
Therefore, please place all cookbook style Farming Recipes on the Farming Recipes page.

Also, if you feel you have productive information that may lead towards a successful plant, though cannot achieve one yet with your information, active discussion and methods are welcome to be posted at Farming Recipe Attempts.
Farming without recipes
So you want to be a real farmer and grow fruits and veggies without any recipes. Yee haw! Perhaps you're trying grow a plant that we don't have a recipe for yet, or maybe you just want to try to do better than what's been posted thus far, well this section is for you. Here you can share and discover general approaches to farming new plants.
Park's method
Growing plants without a recipe is an inexact science at best. Your best bet is to hit a plant with smurf lots, and lots of any air or water. This will bump up the basic resources enough for you to watch them drop. If something drops faster than the rest it is being eaten by the plant. When you know what a plant is eating, skim through the food charts and slowly feed it more than it is consuming. If you max out and haven't achieved a successful growth round, let the resources drop back down, check the invisible resources to see if they're screwing with you, and then start picking random resources to bump up along with the ones the plant is consuming.
Keep in mind that some plants are consuming bugs/shrooms/weeds, so always watch these. There are many plants that are eating something but the tolerable range for it is very low. Do not just dump tons of resources onto later plants and hope for the best, you're wasting your time.
If you get a successful grow round, you win, you're now theoretically capable of growing this plant. Make a note of what resources this plant eats, what the visible soil conditions were before each successful growing round(this is why you look at these things constantly), and what you did to achieve the soil conditions. Just make sure that your notes are descriptive enough so that you can recreate the conditions even if you happen to forget everything before the next time you find this plant.
Then start figuring how fast the plant is consuming things so you can maintain the successful growing conditions. Eventually you'll figure out that little of this or some+lots of that will maintain the correct resources. Keep track of these, and all the visible soil conditions whenever you see a growing round. You'll find that some things are absolute requirements, and that having any amount of others is okay.
Once you can string together growth rounds you just need to go back and figure out how to prep the soil to go straight into your feeding sequence.
Retarded Fingolfin Method
In some of the recipes, you'll see reference to RFM, which stands for "Retarded Fingolfin Method".
It only uses detroit air, smurfy fert, and gulf water and works like this:
- Start each recipe by doing (before it grows): aerate lots x 5, water lots x 5, and fertilize lots x 10
- Anything that I've marked will at least sometimes give a growing emote eventually (though it may die a few times first)
- After a growing emote, I would try to keep it alive. Measuring devices might help. I only looked at air, water, nutrients.
- My hints on how to keep the plant alive are the real recipe.
- When I give just an amount, that means aerate, then water, then fertilize. All with that amount, and in that order. My shorthand for doing these three things in that order is feed.

Here's my (Lovecraft's) assessment of the messages. I also believe that the messages are ranked though the following lists are not ordered. The list is incomplete. I also believe that the messages have meaning, such as "Wait and let the conditions settle" or "Add more" or "Bad Mix".
put the various unknown/neutral messages in their appropriate places, i haven't hammered out the order of these suckers yet though(park)

Interface
More than anything else, your interface is really the key to farming. Simply put, you aren't going to be doing much on telnet, and the more your client takes care of for you, the better off you'll be.
I have client side aliases for all foods that look something like this:
/alias happy \ /let f %1%; \ /while (f) \ /if (f>3) \ /let x lots%; \ /let f $[f-4]%; \ /elseif (f>1) \ /let x some%; \ /let f $[f-2]%; \ /elseif (f==1) \ /let x little%; \ /let f $[--f]%; \ /endif%; \ fertilize %x Happy Ed's fertilizer%; \ /done
It is rather unfortunate that the lots/some/little ratio is closer to 3.5:2:1, but having 4 as my lots works well enough. Once in place you can do things such as:
/alias kiwistart smurf 8%%;happy 13%%;ser 10%%;atl 16%%;mount 28%%;ant 16%%;smurf 8%%;ttest
Which will apply smurf lots*2, happy lots*3+little, serinth lots*2+some, atlantis lots*4, mount perplexus lots*7, ant caves lots*4, smurf lots*2, and then use all tools and look at the ground. Modifying your method on the fly becomes doable, and fine tuning becomes simple.
You're also going to need your client to parse information for you.

The first line is all visible resources, the third line is all tool readings, and the second and fourth lines are the targets to shoot for on the current plant and get displayed in a different color.
Finally, inventory management is a giant chore and running out of stuff mid grow is going to kill your plant pretty effectively. A farm inventory tracking system is very helpful.
