Special melee defense reduces incoming melee damage. Melee damage is what you see when mobs hit you with these Damage Emotes. Specials or spell damage would typically be shown to you as something like: The master kobold launches a fireball at your head. Ouch, it burnses!
These damage reductions, when blocking all damage from a melee hit, will show up as 'struck but did no damage to' not 'missed you'.
Your character's overall 'Special Melee Defense' is shown on the output from the 'score' command. Your special melee rating seems to rise somewhat in combat, and fall when not in combat.
Here are the Special Melee Defense levels:
Defense : None Defense : Vbad Defense : Bad Defense : Poor Defense : OK Defense : Good Defense : Great Defense : Grand Defense : Superb Defense : Ultimate Defense : Unbreakable

- Reforger profession allows you to add to the Defense provided by a given item.
- Your Defense level is negatively affected by carrying too much in your inventory
- Ie. if you are at the top end of 'collapsing under your load', you may notice it drop a level
- Does adventuring.packing.carrying mskill influence SMD?
